Born in Ljubljana, Dončić is the son of Mirjam Poterbin, who owns beauty salons, and Saša Dončić, a basketball coach and former player. His mother is Slovenian, while his father is a Slovenian of Serbian descent from Kosovo. His parents divorced in 2008, and his mother was granted custody.
Dončić was introduced to basketball at a very young age, touching a ball when he was just seven months old and playing with a miniature hoop by age one.
